Riparian Planting Grants from Northland Regional Council

Team Vegetation is one of only a handful of businesses approved by Northland Regional Council to provide riparian tree planting in the Northland region. As a result landowners can apply for a grant to assist in this planting and have our team do the work.

We have been providing planting services throughout Northland for many years. As well as providing consultancy to farmers, we also provide the manpower and machinery to get the job done right. And now that’s been recognised by NRC, and we’re delighted to be named one of their approved businesses.

Paul Rountree, General Manager

Protecting our land and rivers for future generations.

It is vitally important that we protect our land and rivers for future generations and that means ensuring that run-off is handled appropriately whilst allowing farms to flourish.
62% of our lowland rivers are unsafe to swim in, with pathogen levels that are far too high. Effective planting around rivers and pasture enables plants to filter out sediment and nutrients before they reach the stream water. It also enables trees to stabilise the banks of rivers, prevent the erosion of soil and improve the habitat for local wildlife. Its a win win situation for both farmers and our environment.

What is Riparian Planting?

Riparian Planting creates grass buffer strips in the fenced riparian zones of both farm and public land. It can be very effective at filtering contaminants in paddock run-off. However, planted riparian margins can also have other benefits such as:

  • Cooling the water to provide better habitat for aquatic species;
  • Providing corridors linking habitat for native species;
  • Providing shade and shelter for stock;
  • Making stock management easier; and
  • Improving the attractiveness of your property.

Managing your weeds

When there is no stock grazing on land then there is the potential for weeds to get established within the fenced riparian margin, especially if there's very little ground cover. Team Vegetation, working with Northland Regional Council, can deliver a regular weed control programme, which may be covered by a local grant.

Keeping pests under control

Undisturbed riparian areas can also become havens for pest animals, such as stoats, weasels, rats, wild cats and hedgehogs. Team Vegetation can assist in providing a poison programme in order to manage these pests and keep them under control.

What’s stopping you from getting your Riparian Planting organised?

For many busy farmers, the cost in terms of dollars and time means that Riparian Planting simply gets pushed down the to-do list. That’s where team Vegetation can help. Contact our team today for a chat about how we can help and how you may be eligible for a council grant to cover the work.
